Many of the popular retirement guides rank the Crossville/Fairfield Glade area as one of the best places in the nation to retire.  In addition to the pristine beauty of the Cumberland Plateau and its mild four-seasons climate,  the low cost of living and year round activities make this part of Eastern Tennessee a wonderful place to spend the best years of your life. 

We're located within a day's drive of half of the United Sates,  close to many nearby attractions and activities.  Crossville is just a short drive from the Great Smoky Mountains, Music City,  and the Chattanooga Choo-Choo!  And if you love golf . . Crossville is the Golf Capitol of Tennessee.

Cost of Living

Utilities:  The mild Plateau climate keeps energy usage in check.  Low  6.1 cents per kilowatt hour electricity, and reasonable water rates make utilities very affordable.

Climate

The Plateau's climate can best be described as moderate.  Folks here enjoy the changing of the seasons while escaping the harsh winter temperatures of the North and the sultry humid summers of the South.  Sports enthusiasts enjoy golf, fishing and other outdoor activities year round.

We do get a cold spell here once in a while, but it doesn't last too long.  It's not unusual to have a  snowfall one day and then see golfers on the course the next afternoon.  We seldom have " weeks-on-end" of cloudy, dreary, depressing winter skies like our Yankee friends do.

Summers produce pleasantly warm days with wonderfully cool evenings (great sleeping weather).  When the inevitable stinkin' hot spell comes to visit, it doesn't last too long.  It's amazing how many retirees have relocated here from their previous retirement locations in Florida, Arizona, Texas, and the Carolinas.   The Plateau's 2,000 ft. elevation provides a haven from the heat and humidity of the surrounding valley communities. 

Summer temperatures are often 10 degrees cooler, with lower humidity than the neighboring valley communities of Knoxville (including Telico and Rarity Bay),  Cookeville,  and Nashville.  We seldom see temperatures in the 90s.  If your lifestyle includes frequent outdoor activities in the summer, make climate a top priority when choosing your new home.  See 30 year climate chart for details.

Medical Services

Cumberland Medical Center is a private not-for-profit facility, offering 182 beds and an additional 20-bed Subacute Care Unit.   The recently added Regional Cancer Center features state of the art technology and expertise in cancer treatment. A 9.4 million dollar expansion project began in 2000 and is almost completed, providing a 4 story tower linking the Regional Cancer Center and medical imaging department.  The hospital offers an array of medical services in addition to the hospital facilities, such as the Outpatient Services at Fairfield Glade Resort, two Wellness Complexes and the 24 hour Hospice care program.

In addition there are over 60 physicians and surgeons practicing in the area, offering a wide variety of private health care. 

Cumberland County also provides quality care for the elderly, offering five nursing homes with 300+ beds.

Plateau Mental Health Center offers a branch facility in Crossville, while the Cumberland County Health Department provides a fully staffed clinic offering preventative and personal health services.

Wyndridge Health & Rehabilitation Center also offers special physical, medical and recreational needs to families.

Don't forget the smaller (or larger?) members of your family.  Six veterinarians practice in the county as well.

Schools

Educational opportunities are plentiful in Cumberland County.  For school age children, Cumberland County offers ten elementary schools and one high school, with approximately 6700 students enrolled in the school system.  Our students consistently score near the top of all state-wide tests.  The schools are currently undergoing a renovation, with two new elementary schools just being completed in the last 4 years.  A 7.2 million dollar renovation project encompassing three others is currently under way.  The elementary schools are zoned by the areas in which you reside.  A student may attend a different school IF at the start of school there is space available in the class and if private transport is available to them.

The Tennessee Technology Center, serving over 1400 students annually, provides a variety of instruction with full-time 'hands-on; training programs and on-the-job experience.  From auto body to practical nursing to business and computers; there is a program here to meet the needs of many.

The Cumberland County Higher Education Center, a collaborative effort of Roane State Community College and Tennessee Technological University, opened its doors in 1989, with a permanent 30,000 square facility just being completed in 1998.  Freshman and sophomore level classes leading to an Associates degree or Technical Certificate are available to all.  Students may select programs parallel to many universities for a smooth transition to a 4-year college.  The center also offers continuing education courses and business and industry training.
